A In a ULD Positionin the Lower Cargo Hold
Because large-dog crates may not fit in the rear bulk cargo compartment where pets are commonly carried, they may be loaded in the lower cargo hold as part of a ULD position.
ULD stands for Unit Load Device. It refers to an aircraft-specific container, or a pallet-and-net system, used to safely consolidate and load cargo, baggage, and mail onto an aircraft. ULD containers are shaped to fit the aircraft fuselage.
When a crate is loaded in a ULD position, appropriate space is maintained around it so that ventilation is not obstructed.
In general, the lower cargo hold is pressurised to a level broadly similar to the passenger cabin. During flight, the pressure is generally maintained at approximately 0.7 atmosphere or above.
Temperature is managed by cargo-hold compartment. When live animals are carried, the designated compartment is generally set at approximately 15–25°C. However, humidity and air pressure cannot be individually controlled for each shipment.
